Embracing Movement for Mental Health: The Power of Moving Outdoors
Embracing Movement for Mental Health with Moving Outdoors
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme of “movement for mental health” takes centre stage, advocating for the significance of physical activity in nurturing our psychological well-being. In a world where the statistics regarding mental health issues among children, young people, and adults are concerning, the call to action for incorporating movement into our daily lives becomes more critical than ever.
According to NHS Digital’s 2023 report, approximately one in five children and young people aged 8 to 25 exhibited signs of a probable mental disorder. Moreover, the struggles persist into adulthood, as evidenced by Youth Employment UK’s findings, indicating that 33.8% of young people in the workforce grapple with their well-being. Alarmingly, the majority of those who require assistance do not receive it, with the Centre for Mental Health reporting that 75% of affected children, young people, and adults go without the necessary support.
Recognising the pivotal role of physical activity in mental health management, the focus shifts to the outdoors—a natural haven offering a myriad of benefits for our psychological well-being. Outdoor learning emerges as a powerful tool for nurturing mental health across all age groups.
Engaging in outdoor activities not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters holistic development. From boosting confidence and social skills to enhancing communication, motivation, and physical prowess, the benefits are vast. Through outdoor exploration, individuals gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while cultivating resilience and problem-solving abilities in the face of challenges.
We are UK Youth’s flagship Outdoor Learning Centre nestled in the scenic landscapes of the New Forest, committed to providing unparalleled outdoor learning experiences. We believe in equitable access to nature’s transformative power. By offering diverse activities tailored to suit various interests and abilities, young people discover their potential while fostering a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.
As we navigate the complexities of mental health, let us heed the call to embrace movement, particularly in the great outdoors. By prioritising physical activity and embracing the natural world, we can cultivate resilience, nurture our well-being, and pave the way for a brighter, healthier future—for ourselves and generations to come.
