Our Approach to Outdoor Learning

Our Approach to Outdoor Learning
We are passionate about the transformative impact of Outdoor Learning. We define this as experiential learning that takes place in an outdoor setting, fostering personal, social, and educational growth in young people. It also enhances their health, well-being, and environmental awareness.
The outdoor environment itself plays a vital role in shaping and enriching the learning experience.

Our Experience, Learn and Develop Approach
We use an ‘experience, learn, develop’ approach where young people learn through what they do, what they encounter and what they discover. Delivered by our experienced outdoor learning practitioners the experience is holistic and the value comes from looking at an individual’s whole self, their individual capabilities and outcomes and is a valuable part of the ecosystem that equips young people to thrive and empowers them to contribute at every stage of their lives.

Outdoor Learning Outcomes
Outdoor learning provides a unique opportunity for young people to experience, learn and develop and many of the skills gained through these experiences are intrinsic to the experiential way young people learn and the outdoor space in which the learning is delivered. Impact is greatest when these experiences are fully integrated with existing learning, and programmes are collaboratively designed between the leaders who understand the needs of the young people and outdoor learning professionals. To support this aspect of decision making we have devised an objective focused outdoor learning matrix which highlights the nine key social and emotional skills that we believe outdoor learning fosters and highlights how an outdoor experience at Avon Tyrrell can achieve this.
