Celebrate Outdoor Learning This November

A Month to Get Outside!

November is a special time for educators, schools, and youth groups to celebrate the transformative power of outdoor learning. With Outdoor Classroom Day on November 7th and Global Outdoor Learning Day on November 21st, there’s no better time to take your lessons outside and embrace the benefits of learning in the natural environment.

Outdoor learning has been shown to boost academic performance, improve mental health, and foster important life skills like leadership, resilience, and communication. When students leave the classroom walls, they engage with the world around them in ways that spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and build confidence.

As Margaret McMillan once said, “The best classroom and the richest cupboard are roofed only by the sky.” The outdoors is a place where learning happens naturally, where young people can explore, discover, and develop in meaningful ways.

At Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre, we firmly believe in the power of outdoor learning. Our approach is based on experiential learning, where young people can develop personally, socially, and educationally in the great outdoors. We define Outdoor Learning as more than just a break from the classroom—it’s an essential part of a child’s growth, supporting their health and wellbeing while fostering environmental awareness.

In our view, the outdoor space isn’t just a backdrop; it’s an integral part of the learning process. It shapes and enhances every session, making learning more dynamic and impactful. Whether you’re teaching in a forest, a schoolyard, or a local park, outdoor learning brings lessons to life in ways that traditional settings cannot.

Bringing outdoor learning to young people doesn’t have to be daunting. To help you make the transition, we’ve put together an Outdoor Activity Pack.

It’s filled with fun, easy-to-follow activities, sessions, and tips on how to integrate outdoor learning into your green spaces.

From nature art, to watch along videos – there is something that everyone can enjoy with a range of team-building exercises and eco-awareness tasks.

The activity pack is free to download and has been put together with the help of our outdoor learning instructors, who have made sure that the seession ideas are enganging for all age ranges and can be simply replicated for your outdoor space. Whether you’re in a small garden, a park, or even a playground, these ideas will help you take the classroom outdoors.
